Understanding Gambling Disorder
Problem gambling is not a failure of willpower; it is recognized by the medical community as a behavioral addiction. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) classifies "Gambling Disorder" in the same category as substance-related disorders due to its clinical expression and impact on brain physiology.
The DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), a diagnosis of Gambling Disorder requires an individual to exhibit four (or more) of the following behaviors within a 12-month period:
- Tolerance: Needing to gamble with increasing amounts of money in order to achieve the desired excitement.
- Withdrawal: Feeling restless or irritable when attempting to cut down or stop gambling.
- Loss of Control: Making repeated, unsuccessful efforts to control, cut back, or stop gambling.
- Preoccupation: Having persistent thoughts of reliving past gambling experiences, planning the next venture, or thinking of ways to get money to gamble.
- Escape: Often gambling when feeling distressed.
- Chasing Losses: After losing money gambling, often returning another day to get even.
- Deception: Lying to conceal the extent of involvement with gambling.
- Jeopardized Opportunities: Risking or losing a significant relationship, job, or educational/career opportunity because of gambling.
- Bailouts: Relying on others to provide money to relieve desperate financial situations caused by gambling.
